1,000,000 Words (25 Books) Campaign
Every student at Byrd is expected to read at least one million words each year by reading throughout the school day, after school, and at home. Why read a million words a year? We learn to read by reading; we become fluent readers by reading; we read to learn. Students who read 25 minutes a day at a rate of 200 words per minute for 200 days out of the year will read one million words.
Students who read 25 books that are 125 pages long by the end of the school year will have read approximately 1,000,000 words. By reading a million words a year, students acquire new vocabulary and increase their reading skill. Reading builds the vocabularies students need to improve comprehension of increasingly complex materials that they encounter through their educational careers.
Reading widely and deeply in school also is a way for students to acquire background knowledge that helps them construct meaning. In addition, reading a variety of texts and authors builds their understanding of story structures, syntax, spelling, and punctuation.
The 25 books Campaign also helps create a “culture of reading” in our school. Byrd students who work consistently toward the goal of completely 25 books will be rewarded. In order to help students stay on track, those who read 3 books a month will be eligible for a pass for a free dress day. That means no uniform for one day a month! We are also working on other prizes throughout the year, as well as a cash prize at the end of the year. If you would like to donate a gift card for us to use as an incentive, please contact Julie Reagle at Byrd.
We’re asking all of our parents to support our students in their quest to read 25 books. You can do this by reminding your child to spend time reading at home, and sign off on their reading logs to verify books read.
Dear Parent or Legal Guardian:
Senate Bill 982 was passed by the Oklahoma Legislature and signed into law by Governor Henry on June 7, 2005. The law requires eighth grade students entering the ninth grade in the 2010-2011 school year to complete a college preparatory curriculum, unless the student’s parent or legal guardian approves the student to “opt out” of the college preparatory curriculum. If the parent or legal guardian chooses to “opt” the student out of the college preparatory curriculum, the parent must sign and return the form below.
Choosing the courses a student takes in high school is an important decision for you and the student. A college preparatory curriculum is challenging and may help determine a student’s future success. Research indicates that students who take a college preparatory curriculum and pursue education and training beyond high school have more career opportunities, and have a higher income and rate of employment.
You are not required to sign this form as the student will automatically be enrolled in the college preparatory curriculum. However, if you do not want your student enrolled in the college preparatory curriculum, you must complete the information below and return it to the school prior to enrollment. The existing curriculum and college preparatory curriculum options are attached. If you have questions, please contact your school principal or school counselor.
To “opt out” of the college preparatory curriculum, please return the form below to your school prior to enrollment.
As the parent or legal guardian, please do not enroll the following student in the college preparatory curriculum.
Student’s Name (print): Grade: Name of High School: Parent/Guardian’s Name (print) Parent/Guardian’s Signature Date Parent/Guardian’s Mailing Address: Daytime Telephone Number:
